Steam is especially helpful in relieving swelling and sinus pressure. The hot vapor can break up mucus and ease congestion. A hot shower can produce the steam necessary to reduce some swelling. Over-the-counter (OTC) steam tablets can be added to the shower for even more relief. However, the best way to use steam is by placing steaming hot water in a bowl or steam inhaler. Cover the head with a towel and lean over the bowl to absorb the steam.
